School Field Trips & Military History Programs in Grande Prairie
Bring your class to Veterans Memorial Gardens & Interpretive Centre for a hands-on military history school field trip in Grande Prairie, or borrow one of our education kits to use in your own classroom.
Our school experiences connect students with Canadian military history, Northwestern Alberta veterans, remembrance and the stories of the people who served. Programs are designed to complement classroom learning while giving students opportunities to work with historical stories, artifacts, research and hands-on activities.

School Visit & Education Kit Options
Operation: Coyote — The Animals and Symbols of War
Grades 1–3
Operation: Coyote introduces younger students to Canadian military history through the animals, mascots and symbols associated with military service and remembrance.
At Veterans Memorial Gardens:
$30 per hour, minimum 4 hours
Minimum cost: $120
Borrow the Education Kit:
$20 refundable damage deposit
Schools are responsible for printing the required Teacher’s Guide and Student Activity Guides whether the program is delivered at Veterans Memorial Gardens or the education kit is borrowed for classroom use.
Operation: NW Alberta Soldier
Grades 4–12
Operation: NW Alberta Soldier connects students with the military history of Northwestern Alberta through the stories of soldiers and veterans from our region.
At Veterans Memorial Gardens:
$30 per hour, minimum 4 hours
Minimum cost: $120

Beading a Soldier’s Story©
Grades 7–12
Delivered in partnership with the Canadian Indigenous Military Tourism Association (CIMTA), Beading a Soldier’s Story© is a 5.5-hour Indigenous military history and remembrance experience.
Students research the life and military service of an Indigenous soldier, learn cultural protocols and create a beaded memorial artifact connected to the soldier whose story they have learned.
Program length: 5.5 hours
Cost: $75 per student
The student experience includes Indigenous Knowledge Holders, artisans and cultural educators, beading materials and facilitated program delivery.
Bringing Your Class to Veterans Memorial Gardens
Veterans Memorial Gardens & Interpretive Centre provides a unique setting for Grande Prairie school field trips. Students learn surrounded by the memorials, exhibits, artifacts and stories that preserve the military history of Grande Prairie and Northwestern Alberta.
School visits can complement classroom learning related to Canadian history, Alberta history, the First and Second World Wars, Indigenous military history, veterans, citizenship, community, remembrance and reconciliation.
Bringing Our Education Kits to Your School
Your class does not have to visit the museum to participate in Operation: Coyote or Operation: NW Alberta Soldier.
Both military history education kits can be borrowed for classroom use, making them available to schools in Grande Prairie and throughout Northwestern Alberta.
Each education kit includes the program teaching resources and materials. Schools print their own Teacher’s Guide and Student Activity Guides.
